(USA did not enter WW1 until April 6 1917. When World War I erupted in Europe in 1914, the 28th U.S. president Woodrow Wilson pledged neutrality, in line with American public opinion. While Wilson tried to avoid war for the next three years, favoring instead a negotiated settlement, he was very quickly running out of options. Tensions heightened as Germany tried to isolate Britain, and in 1915 and announced unrestricted attacks against all ships that entered the war zone around the British Isles. In early April 1917, with the toll in sunken U.S. merchant ships and civilian casualties rising, Wilson asked Congress for “A war to end all wars” that would “make the world safe for democracy." Congress voted to declare war on Germany — then optimistically called the “Great War.”)

Roughly opened at top, and part flap missing. Rapid Bay is a locality that includes a small seaside town and bay on the west coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, with a population of only 16 in 2016, this is a very rare destination. Prior to the establishment of the South Australian colony, whalers based on Kangaroo Island were known to have called at Rapid Bay though it was not so named until 1836. South Australia Colonial Surveyor General Colonel William Light made his first landfall on mainland South Australia at Rapid Bay on 8 September 1836. The site was named after Light's ship, the 162 ton brig Rapid. To mark this historic landfall the Colonel's initials, "W.L.", were carved into a large boulder – a replica is visible in the township, while the original is stored in the South Australian Museum, in Adelaide. John Rapid Hoare (7 November 1836 – perhaps 7 July 1916), also named for the brig Rapid, was the first European child born on mainland South Australia. Rapid Bay was briefly considered by Light as a potential site for the new colony's capital, but with the discovery of the Adelaide Plains it faded into quiet obscurity. On his first visit, Light created a garden then left the bay in the hands of Kangaroo Island sealers and indigenous people from the Encounter Bay area. Addressed to Mrs. S.J. Lord, Delamere, a long time resident of the area. Her Grandson Des Lord has written a book on Rapid Bay, available from Yankalilla & District Historical Society. Typed address cover, price $75

He attained the rank of Lieutenant on 1 March 1917. On 2 April 1919, he was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry during a battle on the Selle River in October 1918, for which he was also Mentioned in Despatches. The citation read: Lt. James Taylor Vinton Smith, 113th (Howitzer.) Battery, 13th Bde., Aust. F.A. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on 17th October, 1918, at the capture of the high ground E. of La Selle river. His battery occupied a position 1,000 yards in rear of the front line, and suffered many casualties from machine-gun and artillery fire. The battery commander and another officer being both wounded, he took charge, and supervising the removal of the wounded, handled the battery most capably until its task was completed. On 22 July 1952, Vinton Smith told his wife he was going to the shed at their Malvern East home to chop wood. She decided to check on him when she heard the chopping stop, and found him dead from a gunshot wound, with a 22-calibre rifle underneath his body.
