The pale shade being a right hand marginal. Cancelled by Melbourne machine cancel of 25MAR.14. A single on cover  is cat. a minimum $300 on cover. Price $495

APH1522) Australia 1917 small censored cover to USA. Bears 2½d Indigo 2nd wmk Kangaroo cancelled by South Yarra Vic. Cds of  14 AP 17. Addressed to Frank H Hollman, of Warrenton Missouri who was a noted pigeon breeder. Straight line “PASSED” in violet on front. Cat. $180 on cover, price $135

APH784) Australia 1917 small censored cover to Switzerland. Bears 2½d indigo 2nd wmk. Kangaroo, cancelled by machine cancel of Sydney, NO 15 1917, and with purple opened by censor tape at left.  Arrival cds of Grenchen 16.1.18 on reverse. Neat typewritten cover, opened a little roughly at top. Latish use for the Kangaroo as the third wmk was issued in Sept. 1917. Price $239

Cancelled by Sydney cds of  8 JY 22, and with red Sydney registered “Rat’s tail” label No. 7735. Opened roughly at left, and light vertical filing crease does not affect the adhesives. Clean and attractive with typed address. Price $115
 
TS143) Australia 1923 Long Registered OHMS Letter, Adelaide – Port Adelaide. Bears 2d Red KGV perf OS, cat. $150 on cover. Cancelled by unclear Adelaide machine cancel and with Port Adelaide  9MR23 on reverse, plus with Dead Letter Office cds in red of 12 MR 23. Face has single line UNCLAIMED and RTS Finger Return to Sender pointing to Port Adelaide cds of 10MR23. Finally a Dept. of Lands and Survey return oval on face of 13MAR 1923. Stamp also has two unlocated flaws which make Kangaroo appear to be shackled on both front and hind feet! Nice cover, if a bit aged. Cat. $150 on cover, price $100

Readdressed to Caulfield and with instruction markings as follows: Unknown by postman St. Kilda, Unclaimed at St. Kilda, Unknown by letter carrier Caulfield. Reverse has cds’s as follows: Preston 1 SE 23, Registered Melbourne 3 SE 23, St. Kilda 3 SE 23, Caulfield 3SE23, Registered Melbourne 4 SE 23., and finally Dead Letter office Melbourne 12SP23. Fascinating! Price $119

Bears full set of 3 Harbour Bridge to 5/- cancelled by Harbour Bridge slogan “POSTED ON BRIDGE/DURING OPENING/CELEBRATIONS” 19 Mar 1932 (The opening day) The 5/- has missed being cancelled and has a Sydney cds of 21MR32. Reverse bears a Sydney Air Mail cds also of 21MR32.  Roughly opened, and flap missing, some aging. Still a very rare cover! Price $1150

APH776) Australia 1935 surface mail Advertising cover of United Ancient Order of Druids to Chicago. Bears 3d Blue MacArthur cancelled by cds of Penrith NSW of 12 FE 1935. Cover shows headquarters photo in blue at 302 Pitt St., Sydney. The United Ancient Order of Druids (UAOD) was founded in Victoria around 1862. By 1867 the Society had 11 Lodges in Victoria. The Order of Druids was originally a male society until a Juvenile Lodge was opened in Prahran in 1886. Rare cover, price $149

Wolff was a famous Engineer & Inventor, who patented the TV Set and Cathode Ray Tube in the USA 1943 as an “Alien Property Custodian”!  from J & N Tait, Concert Promoters, Melbourne. APH684) Australia 1955 use of 1949 10/- ARMS on airmail commercial registered cover to New York. Sent by Douglas Wilkie of the Sun Newspaper Melbourne to Philip Horton Senior Editor of The Reporter. Douglas Wilkie (1909 – 10 April 2002) was a respected columnist for The Sun News-Pictorial (Australia). The son of travelling Shakespearean actors Allan Wilkie and Frediswyde Hunter-Watts, he began his newspaper career as a copy boy with the Hobart Mercury. This period was followed by Sir Keith Murdoch appointing him as Geelong correspondent for The Herald. Wilkie is best remembered for his political commentary for The Sun News-Pictorial for which he wrote during 1946–1986. Philip C. Horton was a professor of public diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy before his retirement in 1977. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was a graduate of Princeton. He taught English at Harvard and served as curator of poetry at Harvard's Widener Library from 1937 to 1942. During World War II he served in the Office of Strategic Services in Washington, London, Germany and Paris. In 1946 he became the first station chief in Paris of the Central Intelligence Agency. In 1947 he joined Time magazine as an associate editor and two years later left for The Reporter, where he became executive editor, a post he held until the magazine ceased publication in 1969. Cover bears 10/- Arms and 9d Platypus cancelled by cds of Collins St. 1.FE.55 and backstamped Melbourne Registered of the same date and NY Grand Central Stn. Double ring cds in violet of FRB 4 1955. Also bears Collins St. blue reg’n label No. 9288. Rate appears to be 5 x the 2/- Airmail rate, plus 9d for Registration/Insurance. A rare cover of some historical significance. Price $295z

Pair 3½d 1958 Christmas to make 3/3d, being 6d Registration , 9d Insurance &  2/- Postage. Cancelled by Kiama NSW cds’s 20NO58 and GPO Sydney transit cds on reverse of the following day, plus purple Mt. Vernon, New York arrival cds of NOV 24 1958.  Also, with Kiama Reg’n. Label No. 0172 The Kingsford Smith is particularly scarce on commercial cover, and the 1st block of 4 we have encountered in over 30 years! Price $129
 
APH690) Australia 1961 small airmail cover to USA. Bears horiz. pr. 9d Kangaroo & 11d Bandicoot cancelled by cds’s of Rock Flat NSW 3MY61, overpaying the 2/- rate by 5d.  A very scarce postmark, even single stamps and items on piece are rarely seen. Wikipedia states:  The Rock Flat Creek (technically a river) rises below One Tree Hill, on the lower slopes of the Snowy Mountains, part of the Great Dividing Range. The creek flows generally north by west before reaching its confluence with the Cooma Creek just upstream from that creek's confluence to form the Numeralla River (itself a tributary of the Murrumbidgee River), north of the town of Cooma. The creek descends 336 metres (1,102 ft) over its 41-kilometre (25 mile) course. Clean hand addressed cover, part flap missing. Price $110

MSP8) Australia 1969 Tourism Cover of Caloundra, Queensland, commercially used Moorabbin Victoria 21 NOV 69 to Switzerland franked 15c Timber and the 1969 set of 3 x 5c Flight as singles. All of these stamps are scarce on cover, we recently sold a solo use of the 15c Timber for $119. Price $129

Cancelled by Adelaide machine cancel of 6 APR, year not visible, but assumed 1976. Envelope has been folded centrally and affects the 2c and 1 x 3c stamps. Rare survivor. Price $39
