APH5106) Australia 1914. Small printed advertising cover for and to the YMCA San Francisco bearing 1d & 2d 1st wmk. Kangaroos, tied by Melbourne machine cancel of 28AU.14. Clean neat cover, overpaid ½d. Mailed exactly 1 month after the beginning of The Great War, not censored as the USA did not enter the war until April of 1917. Germany had made a secret offer to help Mexico regain territories lost in the Mexican–American War in an encoded telegram known as the Zimmermann Telegram, which was intercepted by British intelligence. Publication of that communique outraged Americans just as German submarines started sinking American merchant ships in the North Atlantic. Pres. Woodrow Wilson then asked Congress for "a war to end all wars" that would "make the world safe for democracy", and Congress voted to declare war on Germany on April 6, 1917.
